THE DAILY FIX (I_FOLLOW)

(Q) How long have you been taking photos of graffiti & what interests you to do so?

(A) I have always followed graffiti, but only started to heavily take photos of it about 2 years ago. I do it out of love. This is my NYC.

(Q) Do you own photo albums of actual prints or do you prefer digital?

(A) Mostly digital, but I experiment with older cameras like Polaroids and Holgas.

(Q) How many photos are in your personal collection?

(A) I have over 2,000 photos up on my Flickr page. For every shot there I probably took ten or more to get one I liked, so let’s just say a lot.

(Q) Do you feel photography plays a major role in documenting graffiti culture?

(A) It’s another part of the tale.

(Q) Do you have any crazy stories or memorable moments while taking photos?

(A) Nothing crazy, the occasional Cop or Citizen that wants to know what you’re doing, but all in all it’s been nothing but love from all the neighborhoods I go to and those I meet.

TIE’S WAREHOUSE VIDEO PROJECT

I was contacted today via Flickr by Shutter_Se7en letting me know he just finished his video project of The Washington Packing Corp. building (A.K.A. Tie’s Warehouse) RIP TIE!!

I took this from his Vimeo:

“The old tuna cannery, known to writers as Tie’s Warehouse, has been one of my most favorite buildings since moving up here nearly 4 years ago. I began this project of documenting the building’s history and physical characteristics–graffiti, homeless, writers, urban explorers and photographers, essentially everyone who utilizes the building. There has really been a push for me to photograph this building in it’s entirety. People have began scrapping the bulding for what’s left of the metal inside. The window frames are already gone, which is a shame. I felt the need to capture the essence of this beautiful building before it is reduced to a concrete skeleton. This structure, which has been state property since 1970, has become a cultural icon for the San Francisco. I have also heard rumors that it has been designated as a historical landmark, yet I could not find any information to support the claim. Rumor had it that this building was owned by Cal Trans, and that their plan was to demolish it, but I could not find any documentation to prove it. Finally, late last year, 2009, the old cannery was demolished.” – Shutter_Se7en

THE DAILY FIX (TOXIC WASTE DUMP) SET 2

(Q) How long have you been taking photos of graffiti & what interests you to do so?

(A) I took my 1st photo’s of graffiti in Staten Island, NY in the late 80s as a super young buck, off of a long hiatus of crazy girlfriend sexcapades, binge drinking and pure hooliganism I started back flicking again around 99, I started a New Jersey website called Aerosol Warzone. It had over a 1000 fliks mainly NJ but with hundreds of benching fliks as well as alot of NYC action. I mainly got into documenting graffiti because of the sheer abundance of it throughout my area of the country.

(Q) Do you own photo albums of actual prints or do you prefer digital?

(A) I have alot of photographs in albums all categorized – North Jersey, Central Jersey, NYC, local freights, national freights etc, I have bombing albums, piecing albums u name it…. approximately 2 years ago I caved in and went digital, I actually like it better, less storage space and better fliks.. I would waste 10 hard copy fliks trying to get a car in a highway flik, with a digital u can just delete the blurry ones or shitty ones and move on.

(Q) How many photos are in your personal collection?

(A) Since I went digital i’ve taken about 3000 fliks. In my personal collection of all my graffiti fliks the total is well over 5000.

(Q) Do you feel photography plays a major role in documenting graffiti culture?

(A) Yes, I travel a decent amount so I enjoy taking fliks of nature and cityscapes, I think I have a decent eye for photographing both, I think between that and some photography class I took in college and knowing who is who in the graff game it helps in my graffiti picture taking skills.

(Q) Do you have any crazy stories or memorable moments while taking photos?

(A) When going on flik missions I treat it as if im out on another type of mission, i’m always looking out, if people are lingering around a spot I want to flik, i’ll just come back, if i’m going to a freight yard and there are workers doing there thing I wont go in… it helps with unneccesary questioning or blowing up of a spot. as far as memorable moments, well when I would get fliks developed there would always be kids asking me, yo you write? or telling me what spot I should flik next, I wasnt feeling it, so i’d go to another place only to be asked again by a different kid. Shit was annoying. I’m sure they were making doubles haha, oh and for the record when a camera of mine bites the dust I duct tape them to the bottem of a boxcar and send them on there last mission.
