KAWS INTERVIEW IN BLAST MAGAZINE

Here is an interview Kaws did with Blast Magazine.. I used Google translate to convert it from French to English so it might sound a lil weird..

What pushed you towards art?
I’ve always been attracted to art because there are inadequate limits of art is infinite, and because one can spend his entire life to do and still be far from finished even his death.

How would you describe your work?
This is something that must see to understand, I’d rather not express it in words.

What was the turning point in your career?
There was a moment when I realized that’s what I was doing was something that I continue to do, and that I should consider my work with respect.

What inspires you?
It can really come from anywhere. I know it’s a response a little weak but I can not explain it any other way. I’m open to everything I meet. It can be a painting that I see at the museum or a package of biscuit that I saw on the street.

Are the current classical art history arouse emotions in you?
I really interested in all types of art. Last week I spent a day at the Prado in Madrid to watch the paintings of Goya. It’s always very inspiring to see these paintings in real life, it’s been aware of the quality and quantity of work produced by certain artists.

What would be the ideal place to expose your work if you could choose between all parts of the world?
I often think about making a huge outdoor sculpture in Jersey City in the neighborhood where I grew up.

You collect yourself art?
I love being surrounded by works of other artists so I buy from time to time.

Do you feel concerned by the art market and how people invest their money?
It is a strange but interesting world and I think too much thinking can be stressful.

The Street Art has a great success right now. Is what you are proud of this success?
I think that creates and sells a lot of bad things in the name of “Street Art”. I would be much happier if we were interested in my work without feeling obliged to be classified under this broad label.

Pharrell Williams is one of your collectors. What do you think of his work as a designer? Will you ever considered working with him?
Pharrell is a very creative and energetic. He does not place any barrier. Which is great and sets it apart from many others is that he truly realized the things he thought. It’s always a pleasure to talk with him, I’d be very happy to work with him on anything that comes along.

You feel like part of a new generation of artists in the U.S.?
I live in Brooklyn and I do not really consider American artist. I work a lot in other countries for over ten years. I would rather be known for my work, not to the point where I am.

What does it mean to you success?
Able to do what we want from life!

What moves you forward in life?
The sense of an uncertain future.

Where will you be in ten years?
If I knew it bother me.
