The Daily Fix (Gordon Gekkoh)

(Q) How long have you been taking photos of graffiti & what interests you to do so??

(A) I started taking photos when I went to New York for the first time back in 2007.. While doing so, I realized how much I enjoyed walking around flicking shit and figured that I could do the exact same thing in San Francisco, so I did.. I also feel that street shit doesn’t get enough attention from photographers.. Everyone wants to flick the glossy pieces, i’m more focused on the black n’ white throwups I see on the pulldowns and the grimey tags on the mailboxes..

(Q) How many photos are in your personal collection??

(A) Roughly 3,000 or so..

(Q) Do you feel photography plays a major role in documenting graffiti culture??

(A) I feel it’s hands down the best and only way!! Without it, kids would have no idea what it is that they missed out on.. Photography keeps graffiti alive after it gets buffed, that’s what I love about it..

(Q) Do you have any crazy stories or memorable moments while taking photos??

(A) I’ve been yelled at a bunch of times by people.. I’ve been asked by people, why i’m helping to promote vandalism?? My favorite moments are when I walk up to something to flick it and some middle aged dude is doing the same shit with his iPhone because he thinks it’s that amazing.. It goes to show that everyone at one point or another has to sit back and say “damn!! that is beautiful” when it comes to certain pieces of Graffiti and that it’s actually worth remembering..
